Data centre drivers and Australia’s hyperscale future

Sydney’s data and technology infrastructure has received a major boost, announced as the site of Digital Realty’s fifth Australian data centre.

The opening of Digital Erskine Park II helps cement Australia’s status as a fast-growing tech and innovation hub. The country is responsible for 4% of the world’s global data centre market. What’s more, an EY report found Australia had the world’s fifth-highest rate of fintech adoption.

Drivers for the move include the growing use of public cloud, with spending forecast to grow by 18.5% according to Gartner. Of course, location is also crucial. That’s one reason why Singapore has become such a powerhouse in the APAC region. And it’s why Sydney, as another APAC hub, is so attractive for data centres. The surge in hyperscale interest is why Sydney, along with Melbourne, will see revenues rise to $955.5 billion by 2021, up from $564.8 billion today.

The 7,000-square-metre facility will provide up to 17.4 megawatts of power capacity across Australia and internationally. Digital Realty also announced the purchase of another site which will be for Digital Erskine Park III. This data centre is expected to add a further 12 megawatts, and will open by 2020 subject to planning approval.

Other features of Digital Erskine Park II include:

  • Modular build
    The POD Architecture uses a modular methodology to build out raised floor data centre capacity using standard power and cooling building blocks for cost-effectiveness, design flexibility and energy efficiency.  This unique trademarked system leverages Digital Realty’s deep expertise and extensive experience designing and building data centres around the globe.
  • State-of-the-art cooling
    The solution includes a pumped refrigerate economiser cycle, ensuring excellent annualised Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) without water usage, a key factor in ensuring a low impact on the environment.  The data centre also features lithium ion battery technology, which provides better performance than traditional lead acid batteries.
  • Dark fibre connectivity
    The new facility will be connected via dark fibre to the existing facilities on the Digital Realty Erskine Park connected campus, bringing together critical data centre, network, cloud and connectivity providers under a single, secure environment for Australian and international customers.  The new facility will have the ability to connect directly to PIPE-IX, the second-largest Internet Exchange in Australia, housed within the Digital Realty Erskine Park connected campus.
